Turkish Language Test and Support Program

Students who cannot present a recognized Turkish language qualification sit for the Turkish Language Tests of the Eastern Mediterranean University. (Please see Turkish Language Requirements for further details).

Turkish Language Test: Stage 1

Content

Turkish Language Test - Stage 1 consists of 100 questions and 4 sections:

  • listening
  • language in use
  • reading
  • conversation skills

The questions in each section have four levels of difficulty:

  • beginner
  • elementary
  • pre-intermediate
  • intermediate

Success Criteria

The test results are not based on the total number of correct answers but are calculated according to the number of correct answers in each level of questions.

According to their test results, students take the Turkish Language Test Stage 2 or are placed into either TUSL 503 or TUSL 501, which are courses of the Turkish Language Support Program.

Turkish Language Test Stage 2

In order to take the Turkish Language Test Stage 2, students are expected to answer correctly at least 60% of beginners, 60% of elementary, 60% of pre-intermediate and 60% of intermediate questions in the Turkish Language Test Stage 1.

TUSL 503 (B1) (Intermediate Level Turkish)

Students who have answered minimum 60% of beginners and 60% of elementary questions in the Turkish Language Test Stage 1 correctly are placed into TUSL 503 course.

TUSL 501 (A1/A2) (Basic Turkish for Postgraduate Students)

Students who have failed to answer at least 60% of beginners and 60% of elementary questions in the Turkish Language Test Stage 1 correctly are placed into TUSL 501 course.

Turkish Language Test Stage 2

The Turkish Language Test Stage 2 assesses listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. The reading and listening parts include multiple choice and short answer questions. In the writing part, students are expected to write an academic composition. For the speaking part, students attend a face-to-face interview. In line with the results obtained from this test, students who have obtained

  • minimum 75% of the test score are exempt from Turkish Support Program.  
  • less than 74% of the test score are placed into TUSL 505.


n.b. Only students registering for the first time and students with frozen registration can take the Turkish Language Exam Stage 1 and Stage 2 at the begining of the semester.

Registration for maximum 2 courses for thesis programs and 3 for non-thesis programs are allowed.

Each department determines the number of courses to be taken within the framework of the Scientific Preparation Program, on the condition of not having any clashes with the compulsory Turkish courses.

FLEPS: Foreign Languages and English Preparatory School

* If the number of students registered for TUSL 501 and TUSL 503 is low, students may register for another equivalent course (e.g. TPS101/TPS102). EMU Rector's Office determines whether the Postgraduate Turkish Support Program will be offered or not if the number of registered students is not sufficient.

** In the event of having low number of registered students at TUSL 505 courses, the courses may not be offered. In such circumstances, students can register for postgraduate programs in EMU, on the condition that they present a document certifying that the student has registered at institutions which issue documents with international validity.

Passing Courses

Passing courses is possible in two ways:

1.  Standard Course Passing

Students achieve a satisfactory grade in their current course and move up to the next course. 

2.  End of Term Turkish Language Tests Stages 1 and 2

Registered postgraduate students wishing to complete the Turkish Support program earlier than expected can take the End of Term Turkish Language Tests Stages 1 and 2 in line with the conditions stated below. These tests are administered at the end of each term after the final exams. Successful students can 'jump' a level or obtain exemption from the Turkish Support Program depending on their test results. Scores obtained from the Turkish Language Tests Stages 1 and 2 are used in favour of students. A passed course is not repeated.

Students who;

  • have passed or failed TUSL501 course,
  • failed TUSL503 course,

are entitled to take the End of Term Turkish Language Test Stage 1. Students who pass the End of Term Turkish Language Test Stage 1 can take the End of Term Turkish Language Test Stage 2. Depending on their test results, students register for courses corresponding with their levels or are granted exemption from the Postgraduate Turkish Support Program.

Students who;

  • have passed TUSL503 course,
  • have failed TUSL505 course,

are entitled to take the End of Term Turkish Language Test Stage 2. Depending on their test results, students registered for courses corresponding with their levels or are granted exemption from the Postgraduate Turkish Support Program.

n.b. 

  • Results of Turkish Language Tests Stages 1 and 2 are used in favour of students. In this respect, students who have passed a Turkish Language course do not repeat it regardless of their End of Term Turkish Language Tests Stages 1 and 2 results.
  • Students, who will re-take the End of Term Turkish Language Tests are subject to the exam fee, if any.
