English Language Tests and the Postgraduate English Support Program

Students without a recognized English language qualification need to take the EMU English Language Tests. Please see English Language Requirements for further details.

The English Language Test: Stage 1 (Placement Test)

Aim

The English Language Test : Stage 1 (Placement Test) has two functions:

  • to place students into their correct levels
  • to determine the students who are eligible to take the English Language Test: Stage 2 

Content

The English Language Test - Stage 1 (Placement Test) consists of 100 multiple choice questions and has four parts;

  • listening
  • language in use
  • reading
  • conversation skills

The questions in each part have four levels of difficulty;

  • beginner
  • elementary
  • pre-intermediate
  • intermediate

Success Criteria

The test results are not based on the total number of correct answers but according to the number of correct answers in each level.

According to their test results, students take the English Language Test: Stage 2 or are placed into either ENGL 511 or ENGL 509.

 English Language Test: Stage 2

  • In order to take the English Language Test : Stage 2, students must answer correctly at least 60% of beginners, 60% of elementary, 60% of pre-intermediate and 60% of intermediate questions.

ENGL 511 (A2+/B1)

  • Students who answer correctly only 60% of beginners and 60% of elementary questions in the English Language Test: Stage 1 (Placement Test) are placed into ENGL 511.

ENGL 509 (A1/A2)
  • Students who fail to answer correctly at least 60% of beginners and 60% of elementary questions in the English Language Test: Stage 1 (Placement Test) , are placed into ENGL 509.

The English Language Test: Stage 2

The English Language Test: Stage 2 assesses listening, reading, writing and speaking. The reading and listening parts include multiple choice and short answer questions. For the writing part, students write an academic composition. For the speaking part, students attend a face-to-face interview.

English Medium Programs

  • Students who score 75% and above are exempt from English Support Program courses. The Department of English Language Teaching (ELT) applies different scales regarding the EMU Language Test. Students are advised to contact the ELT Department for specific rules and regulations.
  • Students who score between 60% - 74%, are placed into ENGL 515.
  • Students who score less than 60% are placed into ENGL 513.

Turkish Medium Programs (only PhD)

  • Students who score 70% and above are exempt from English Support Program courses.
  • Students who score between 60% - 69%, are placed into ENGL 515.
  • Students who score less than 60% are placed into ENGL 513.

The English Language Tests are conducted by the English Preparatory School. Please check the  English Preparatory School  website for test samples.

Only newly registered students and students on leave of absence can take the English Language Exam, Stage: 1 and Stage: 2 at the begining of the semester.

YDS/ YÖKDİL: 38 - 49

Registration to maximum 2 program courses for thesis and 3 for non thesis programs are allowed.

Each department determines the number of deficiency courses their students can register for. 

The English Language Test:        Stage 2  ≤ 59
IELTS**: 5.5
TOEFL IBT: 46 - 59
PTE-A: 42 - 49

YDS/ YÖKDİL: 38 - 49

Registration to maximum 2 program courses is allowed.

Each department determines the number of deficiency courses their students can register for.

ENGL515
Advanced Academic English for Postgraduate Students

Compulsory 4-hour course

The English Language Test:        Stage 2 : 60 - 74
IELTS**: 6.0
TOEFL IBT: 60 - 78
PTE-A: 50 - 57
YDS/ YÖKDİL: 50 - 65

Each department determines the number of program/ deficiency courses their students can register for.

The English Language Test:        Stage 2 : 60 - 69
IELTS**: 6.0
TOEFL IBT: 60 - 71
PTE-A: 50 - 54
YDS/ YÖKDİL: 50 - 59

Each department determines the number of program/ deficiency courses their students can register for.

* If the number of students registered for ENGL509 and ENGL 511 is low, students may register to another equivalent English course such as EPS 101 / EPS 103.

** According to a decision taken by the Student Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM) on 14.02.2014, IELTS test scores cannot be used for exemption by Turkish citizens. 

COURSE PROGRESS

Course progress is possible in two ways:

1. Normal Course Progress


Students  achieve a satisfactory grade (S) in their current course and move up to the next course.

2. End of Term English Language Tests: Stages 1 & 2

Registered postgraduate students who would like to complete the English Support Program earlier, can take the End of Term English Language Tests: Stages 1 & 2). These tests  are administered at the end of every term after the final exam. Successful students can 'jump' a course or obtain exemption according to their test results. Students who pass their English  course, do not repeat it regardless of their End of Term English Proficiency Test: (Stages 1 & 2 ) results.

ENGL 509 Students

  • All those students who pass or fail can take the End of Term English Language Test : Stage 1 (Placement Test).
  • Only students who pass the End of Term English Language Test: Stage 1 (Placement Test) can take the English Language Test: Stage 2.

ENGL 511 Students

Only those students who pass ENGL 511 can take the End of Term English Language Test : Stage 2.

  • English Language Test ranges: ≤ 59 → ENGL 513
  • English Language Test ranges: 60  -74 → ENGL 515
  • English Language Test ranges: 75 + → EXEMPTION (no English support courses)

Students who fail ENGL 511 must take the End of Term English Language Test: Stage 1 (Placement Test) first. If they are successful, they can take the End of Term English Language Test: Stage 2.

ENGL 513 Students

All students who pass or fail can take the End of Term English Language Test:
 Stage 2

  • English Language Test ranges: ≤ 59 → ENGL 513
  • English Language Test ranges: 60 - 74 → ENGL 515
  • English Language Test ranges: 75 + → EXEMPTION (no English support courses)

ENGL 515 Students

Only those students who fail ENGL 515 can take the End of Term English Language Test : Stage 2.

  • English Language Test ranges: 60-74 → ENGL 515
  • English Language Test ranges: 75+ → EXEMPTION (no English support courses)
